| I went, again, to Supraclub, this time to see "Laura a jeji tygri," a Czech band which I had gotten a tape of. I was with a few guys from the program and we were kind of late so we couldn’t actually get into the room where they were playing, but then again, we didn’t have to pay to get in. The band was pretty goofy. There were about a dozen people jumping around on stage. | |
Afterwards we went to this club that someone had told Indridi about. It was basically a basement with a lot of graffiti on the wall, a bar, a DJ, a lot of smoke, and a bunch of punksters. They played good music – Sonic Youth, Nirvana, etc. but since there was no windows the room with the music was way too smoky. The air was practically solid. We met this crazy kid who talked to us really quickly for a long time, non-stop, in Czech. His friends kept telling him that we couldn’t understand him, but that didn’t seem to bother him. He would just talk for about 20 minutes at a time, and as far as we could tell, this is what he was talking about:
First he asked us several times if we were Yugoslavian (actually, two of us were American, one Icelandic, and one Turkish). Then he told us that he thought that it was stupid for the Serbs & the Croats to fight because everyone if the same. He went on to illustrate this point by describing all of evolution from the beginning. He described the layout of all the countries, made swimming motions to illustrate coming out of the water, showed us a shell on a pin on his jacket, kept saying "snek" (worm) and "opice" (ape) and a few other words which I neither recognized nor remember. He went off for a little while on a side note about marijuana. He started by telling us that it used to grow 3 meters high and then said a bunch of other stuff and I’m not quite sure what it was, but I think it ended up being a lot shorter. Later he kept saying "strom" (tree). Also, he would point out each of us and himself and say "Kazdy je sobec." (I think this means, "Everyone is an egoist.") Eventually he just completely stopped talking and just made faces and hand gestures at his friend. He was a crazy guy. But good crazy.
